On March 26, 2016, a part of the Brandweb team participated to an event of planting 10000 trees, together with more than 200 volunteers. The action was part of the project “Web app for planting trees| Today’s tree for tomorrow’s oxygen.”
Wanting to be more involved in the project, we came up with the idea of developing an application that can actively bring the event in the online environment.
The idea behind it was to promote the activity of the volunteers, because these kind of initiatives are worth being promoted. The application had to be as simple and intuitive as possible. Therefore, we decided to implement only one button “+” that could be pressed every time a new tree was planted.
Due to the high number of volunteers, the organizers decided to divide them in teams and assign each team a color. In the application, each volunteer could select the color of their team and mark every planted tree.
Every time the + button was pressed, another tree was counted as being planted. Moreover, to increase the awareness of the event, we introduced the option of sharing on Facebook the number of tree planted.
For keeping track of Facebook shares, we created a landing page showing the number of trees in real time. A gamification element was introduced to encourage users to use the application and to help the organizers to keep track of the number of trees. Also, this was a way of keeping the score for each team in real time.
One of the reasons we have chosen a web application and not a mobile one was the fact that we needed an app that can be released in a very short time and there is a certain period of time until apps App Store and Play Store approve apps.
Also, another thing that we had to give a lot of thought was whether to limit to access to the app through login. In the end, we decided to make it as simple as possible and we counted on the fair-play spirit of the volunteers.
The app was developed in only two days by a team of one software developer and two marketers.
We are happy that we had the opportunity to contribute to the event and we are looking forward to participating in the next one.
